Eco Print - Botanical Artworks

Natural components and random art

Flowers and leaves, heat and pressure – these are the basic components for these extraordinary plant pictures, which are created on paper through a combination of deliberate design and chance, with consistently surprising results. Where and when the plants are collected, what paper is used, whether and which stain is applied – all this and much more influences the result.

The technique

Ecoprint is a process in which the structures and colours of plants are brought to the paper by boiling or steaming. Forms emerge thereby, that are sometimes detailed, sometimes shadowy or merging. As a result not only relatively authentic copies are possible, but also very unique, new images can emerge, in which individual plants are no longer immediately recognizable.

A short guide for ONE method. There are more detailed and alternative instructions on the Internet under the keyword ‘Ecoprint’.

1. Collect or buy leaves & flowers; old bouquets can also be used to some extent.

2. Cut paper (e.g. watercolour paper) to the desired size.

3. Make a "lasagne": Paper, plants, paper, plants... .

4. Place the finished stack between solid wire, metal plates, tiles, etc.

5. Hold the pile together, e.g. with architect's clamps.

6. Bring water to the boil in a sufficiently large pot; add alum and rusty nails if necessary. The papers can also be soaked in alum and iron water beforehand. This is recommended if little water comes into contact with the papers during boiling, e.g. when using metal plates.

7. Add the lasagne to the water and cook for approx. 1.5 hours.

8. Take out, open and remove the plants.

9. Rinse, leave to dry and iron if necessary.

Impressions

The beauty of imperfection

The effects of water, heat and pressure, among other things, remain inscribed in the paper and visible as formative elements. Tears in the paper, the imprint of a wire mesh, different "Abbildekräfte" of the plants - the charm of imperfection wafts around many a picture! A touch of Wabi Sabi.

Wide range of applications

Both originals and high-quality art prints beautify and harmonise rooms. The images can also form the basis for further artistic and creative processes – both analogue and digital. Ecoprint offers a wealth of possibilities for creative individuals who enjoy experimenting, as other materials such as fabrics and ceramics can also be printed on.
